Instead of boring you with text I’ll just post some pics from a couple of trips made in August. The road building is at about 750m elevation, mostly Yellow Cedar, some Red Cedar (that rotten stump was about 10′ across, some fir and a little spruce. Logging road building now seems to use just a drilling rig, some sort of dump truck, and an excavator. No cat involved. Arrow pointing to the hoosegow above Clallam Bay Washington. Deck cloud makes it look like it is lower on the hills than it actually is.

ok, got some vid clips, left over from personal stuff, of these two trips. Really not very well done or exciting but I thought I throw them up here. The fast motion part was trying out a not very successful dash mount for the GoPro.

Re: road building
Dunno when the change in roadbuilding processes happened, sometime in the past 15 years.
A Driller/Blaster certification was mandated (BC). One person, one machine (with many, many boxes (that you photographed) of explosives). A driller/blaster can render a hillside to dust or at least crushed rock in a day or so, which an excavator can remove via dump truck. No cat required.
Roadbuilding on the cheap…. 🙂

Yeah, it’s amazing what just one good excavator can do. About the blasting, you know how they blast gravel pits every so often for road rock? Well, just beside the driller in those pictures is the start of a small gravel pit. I don’t know if you can make out the road surface, the tan coloured rock, well I think it was from the new pit, not the grey rock from the pit at the bottom of the hill ( beside the three dump trucks I photographed).
The thing is, the brown rock from that pit is in pretty small bits. Golf ball sized. I didn’t see any crusher or sorter, how the heck do they blast the rock to produce such small stuff? I mean without it going into low earth orbit.
